Open Space through differing Eyes: Statements by Stefan Rusu




Stefan Rusu Ştefan Rusu (born in Câietu, Moldova) currently based in Bishkek/Kyrgyzstan. His artistic and curatorial agenda is closely connected to the processes post-socialist societies underwent and to the changes that occurred in these societies after 1989. He completed an MA in cultural management from Belgrade Art University in 2004. He attended the Curatorial Training Program at Stichting De Appel in Amsterdam between 2005-06, where he co-curated “Mercury in Retrograde.”

Rusu was involved in the development of KSAK - Center for Contemporary Art, Chisinau where he produced curatorial projects and art initiatives since the beginning of 2000. Later in 2013, after he moved to Central Asia he is involved in the development of Dushanbe Art Ground (DAG) center. On the course of 2013-14 together with DAG team he developed “Reimagining The New Man: Practicing civic duties through social and visual media” project, which aim was to understand, analyze and question civic engagement, participatory practices by means of social and visual media in contemporary Tajikistan. The other project he organized in Tajikistan is “Spaces On The Run – Mapping, activating, rethinking the status of public spaces in Central Asian context” and it deals with investigation of the status of public space and to engage with those spaces, using contemporary art practices and social engagement as tools for activating and creative appropriation.

He curated extensively film programs and video exhibitions such as: Mold-golia/Video Art from Republic of Moldova in the frame of Czechpoint - Exhibition of Political Art at NOD Gallery from Prague/Czech Republic and Museum of Art Zilina/Slovakia, New Old Routes – Video Art from Central Asia, Arsenal Gallery, Poland and at BizArt Center, Shanghai/China, Changing Climate Exhibition at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna and VIDEO FORECAST/A selection of Video from Central Asia at AUB Galleries, Beirut/Lebanon. In Between: Video and Film from Tajikistan video program co-curated with Olga Stefan/Itinerant Projects.

Rusu is also the editor of a number of publications: Spaces on the Run (2015), Reimagining the New Man (2014), Chisinau-Art, Research in the Public Sphere (2011)"RO-MD/Moldova in Two Scenarios (2008).
His recent participations includes: VIDEO VORTEX XI:Video in Flux festival, Kochi-Muzeris, Kerala, India and "PLAY/PAUSE, FF/REWIND-Shared Practices & Archaeologies of Media" Workshop & Symposium at İ.D. Bilkent University from Ankara and Festival for Digital Art and Culture, FACE VALUE/Transmediale, 2018, Berlin.
