When thinking about home there are different ideas which appear in one’s mind. It can be a house, a flat, a city structure or the family members all together. In any sense there is always an architectural link to these ideas. It is rather physical in its experience.

The question of living has been also a big topic in the architecture of modernism: utopian projects about the house of the future or communal living. Related to the rest of the urban structure, many of these visionary projects may nowadays seem anachronistic, as if from an era which never happened.

Utopian ideas of communal living were crucial for the Russian constructivists, for the modernists of the 1930s reaching a point of possible realisation with the Athens Charter (1933). It continued within the Soviet bloc in the 1960s only to evaporate somewhere in the postmodern era.

There are a variety of artistic projects and works dealing with the link between modern architecture and ways of living, with utopian and dystopian ideas about the home, about the living space (Lefebvrian l’espace vécu). What happens to the places which once seemed to be the perfect place for living? How do we perceive them?

These are very common and general questions, crucial in their importance. In this presentation there are some artistic positions trying to find answers for themselves, to show and to give an interpretation or a meaning to some places and projects.

The (modernist) architectural structure and its visual analysis was the initial point of departure for the curatorial choice. The second came with a close-up look at particular projects. The selected works deal with the notion of communal living within a modernist utopia. No matter whether it is a commune, a zoological park, a big recreational complex from the 1960s or a “domesticated” monument, these are all projects working with utopias, based on the fundamental idea of creating a place for better living.
